Fohow Liuwei tea: how to drink it and who should not

A glass with food, twice a day, for a month. And eight contraindications from the state registration certificate

Prepared by the WWC editorial team · verified October 10, 2026

In brief

  • Fohow Liuwei tea is a dietary supplement: three-year-aged puer, five herbs and the cordyceps mushroom.
  • According to the state registration certificate: one bag per glass of water at 85–90 °C, five minutes, one glass twice a day for adults during a meal, course of a month. A course takes two packs.
  • The document lists eight contraindications, among them high blood pressure, heart rhythm disorders and insomnia.
  • Where the manufacturer's description and the certificate differ, we go with the certificate.

In the state registration certificate, Fohow Liuwei tea is recorded as a biologically active supplement — “a source of flavonoids, caffeine”. The second half of this line is what explains the contraindications: high blood pressure, disturbed heart rhythm, insomnia. The benefit for which it is drunk is recorded in the manufacturer's description: digestion after fatty food, swelling, the throat of smokers.

Composition

Composition of Liuwei tea: puer, five herbs and a mushroom

The composition includes three-year-aged puer, five herbs — astragalus, sage, chrysanthemum, Japanese honeysuckle and a herb that the description calls five-leaf ginseng — and the Chinese cordyceps mushroom. The name comes from the six flavors: “Liuwei” in Chinese is 六味, where 味 means “taste”, and the six are puer and five herbs.

The base of the blend is puer. It is real tea, from the tea leaf, and the caffeine in the drink comes from it; how much of it is in one bag, the certificate does not say.

Document

State registration certificate RU.77.99.11.003.R.001358.04.21 of April 23, 2021, manufacturer — Fohow (Tianjin) Pharmaceutical Co., Ltd., China. Issued on the basis of the expert opinion of the Federal Research Center of Nutrition and Biotechnology and the test report of its laboratory. In the WHIEDA catalog the tea is listed under article number F031-00. Certificate PDF

What it is for

What Fohow Liuwei tea is drunk for

After a fatty meal

Puer in the blend is responsible for digestion and fat: tea with a meal reduces the amount of fat absorbed from food — this is what the manufacturer's description says. Hence “weight control” in the description: it concerns fat from food.

Heat

Chinese medicine calls internal overheating “heat”: the face burns, the mouth is dry. Chrysanthemum and Japanese honeysuckle relieve heat and remove toxins, and chrysanthemum also calms the liver and protects eyesight — this is how Chinese tradition describes these herbs.

Stagnation and swelling

Sage removes blood stagnation, and the tea itself is diuretic — this is the language of Chinese tradition, and it is also written in the manufacturer's description. If you take medicines that affect blood clotting, discuss the tea with your doctor.

Qi and fatigue

Astragalus replenishes Qi, cordyceps relieves fatigue, five-leaf ginseng is responsible for fat metabolism — this is how their roles are laid out in the tradition and in the description.

Smokers' throat

The description singles out smokers in a separate line: the tea eases a sore throat.

The main task of these is the first one, food: the certificate ties every glass to a meal.

Brewing

How to brew and drink Liuwei tea correctly

The scheme is from the appendix to the state registration certificate.

Bag

One filter bag, 2 g

Water

One glass, 200 ml

Temperature

85–90 °C. Hot water, not boiling water

Steep

5 minutes

How much

One glass twice a day for adults

When

During a meal: with breakfast and lunch

Course

One month

Storage

In a dry place, out of direct sunlight, up to +25 °C, out of reach of children; shelf life — 36 months

Calculation

A pack has 30 bags; at two glasses a day it lasts 15 days, so a monthly course is two packs.

The document differs from the manufacturer's description in two places: there it says “2–3 times a day” and “before and after meals”, here — twice and during a meal. We go with the certificate.

In the partner community it is drunk differently: one bag per liter to a liter and a half of hot water, and this bottle is stretched over the day, until 17:00–18:00. That way one pack lasts a month. But the brew also comes out 5–7.5 times weaker: the same 2 grams per 1000–1500 ml instead of 200. This scheme is not in the certificate. Our position is to drink by the document for the first month: this scheme was checked by the expert review, and the contraindications are written for it.

Who must not use it

Contraindications of Liuwei tea: who must not take it

On partner sites there is usually one contraindication — individual intolerance. The annex to the state registration certificate lists eight.

Intolerance

Allergy to any component: pu-erh, herbs, cordyceps.

Pregnancy and breastfeeding

The tea is not drunk during this time.

Blood pressure and heart

High blood pressure, cardiac rhythm disorders.

Nerves and sleep

Increased nervous excitability, insomnia.

Evening

Taking it in the evening.

Separately about children: the regimen in the document is written for adults, and it contains no recommendations for children. For children — only in agreement with a pediatrician.

Before starting, the document advises consulting a doctor. If you take diuretic pills, this conversation is mandatory: the manufacturer’s description calls the tea itself a diuretic as well.

Tea “for blood pressure”

On partner sites and in training materials it is written that Liuwei lowers blood pressure. High blood pressure is a contraindication under the state registration certificate: if blood pressure is high, the tea is not drunk, and any exceptions are decided only with a doctor.
